Bluebell Wood, With Crows
Oil on board, 36″ x 36″
Painted using references gathered at the wild bluebell woods of Little Bredy, Dorset, this picture was, initially, a study of a scene I thought could have sprung from the pages of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. I exaggerated the ” movement ” of the trees, hoping to create an Ent wood type of scene and, for some months, was pleased with the result. However, feeling something was lacking, I eventually decided to add the crows which, I hoped, would add a hint of mystery. Their addition also played with the idea that crows are harbingers of doom…….in this instance the crows serve as a warning to the trees, as so many wild woods have been consumed by humans for farm land, to build on or, sometimes, just to be tamed. We humans are the ” doom ” for the bluebell wood and the wood is the world of the crows that we humans threaten.
