The Supplicants

This oil on canvas began life as an oil sketch inspired by a photograph in a newspaper I came across many years ago, ( sadly, the details of this photo are long forgotten! ), and has been reworked several times over the years. Despite having considered all sorts of changes, I finally took the painting back to its original oil sketch state and enhanced the light of the fire after reading a book on the Persians and the ancient Zoroastrian faith. The two figures became the Zoroastrian supplicants praying in the presence of the fire and I enjoyed the idea that this scene could be contemporary or several thousand years ago!
